Samuel G. Benson, MD, PhD, received his MD and PhDs in Physiology and Pharmacology from the University of Nebraska, College of Medicine. Following his internship at Bellvue Hospital in New York, he completed his residency in psychiatry at Stanford University Hospital and was a member of the clinical faculty there from 1975 through 1986.


Dr. Benson has practiced extensively in forensic psychiatry, with more than 20 years of experience conducting psychiatric evaluations and giving expert witness testimonies. During these years, he has continued to operate a private practice. He was honored to serve as a member of the Advisory Health Council for the California Department of Health from 1976 through 1986. He also served as a consultant to the California Department of Corrections.


He has had many years experience in executive administrative positions in general medicine, managed care, and mental health services. He is presently the president and founder of the Registry of Physician Specialists (RPS) in Walnut Creek, California. Dr. Benson started one of the first Independent Physician Associations (IPA) in Northern California. This physician network negotiated contracts which brought managed care opportunities to the local physician community. Contra Costa Health Providers operated from 1984 through 1991.  For the past twenty years, RPS has supplied contract providers within General and Mental health to the thirty-four prisons within the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR).
